2023 RO Unit Control System Upgrade

ENERGY

Migration of Reverse Osmosis Unit Control System in Cogeneration Plant

The challenge

The cogeneration plant relies on a reverse osmosis (RO) unit to compensate for the shortage of high-purity condensate in the water supply for the boilers.

The control system was obsolete and the operating terminal was damaged. In addition, the technology was incompatible with the cogeneration plant's control system, which represented:

  • Risk of operational failures in an essential process.
  • Maintaining a stock of spare parts exclusively for that control equipment.
  • Technological limitations for monitoring and control.
  • Risk of interruptions and higher maintenance costs.

The solution

A modern, secure, and scalable platform for controlling the Reverse Osmosis Unit in a Cogeneration Plant.

A comprehensive upgrade of the control system for a reverse osmosis water treatment plant (for boilers) was carried out, replacing discontinued equipment with a modern, secure, and scalable platform.

This was achieved with:

  • New Allen Bradley CompactLogix 5370-L1 PLC with 1734 Point I/O modules via Ethernet DLR.
  • New intuitive and reliable 10.4" Panel View 5310 HMI.
  • High-performance, durable stainless steel NEMA 4X cabinet.
  • Integrating galvanic isolation and I/O protection to the motor panel.
  • Migrating the Ladder program from S7-200 to the new Studio 5000 environment, including optimized visualization in HMI.

The benefits

Technological upgrade, along with reduced risk of failures, unscheduled downtime, and maintenance costs.

With this upgrade, the customer obtained:

  • High-purity feed water guaranteed, protecting boiler operation.
  • Greater reliability and safety in a critical process.
  • A modern, scalable platform integrated into the cogeneration plant's control system.
  • A consistent, easy-to-use human-machine interface, reducing response times.
  • Additional features were added at the end user's request.
  • Lower maintenance costs and reduced risk of unscheduled downtime.

Impact on the plant

Greater efficiency and assurance of system scalability, as well as increased stability and ease of operation.

The modernization of the Reverse Osmosis Unit Control System ensured continuity and efficiency in power generation, extending the useful life of a critical asset and offering greater operational stability.
